There's just about enough of a mix to add some variety, allowing you to have multiple encounters involving them without getting stale.ĬR 1/4, Swarm of Books: Coming from Candlekeep mysteries, there's really not a more fitting foe to guard a wizard's library. If there's evil about, that's perfect growing conditions for blights. They're literally created from other evil thoughts, so you hardly need to justify why they serve anyone.

I also like the idea of these things being pets of a Harpy, to make it just a bit tougher of an encounter for a lvl 1 or 2 party.ĬR 1/4, Constrictor Snake: Not just for Yan-Ti! Their constrict ability is what makes them such good allies, and they make for a suitably sinister pet for all kinds of bandits, hags, lizardfolk, and much more.ĬR 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, Blights: These things are made to be minions but I hardly see them mentioned. Great for those cultist lairs, an ideal horror monster and even an opportunity to have a surprise return from previously slain foes (or friends!).ĬR 1/8, Blood Hawks: With their pack tactics and perception proficiency, they're good attack animals and watchdogs for humanoids such as bandits, druids, aarakocra, etc that doesn't require much explanation. Your players aren't likely to be plumbing the depths of the lower planes where these things live at such low levels, but they're still great to infest sites of planar incursions, or as livestock kept by other fiends and hags. Its a fiend made from apathetic neutral evil souls, its a mostly pathetic maggot with a human face. But the larva is the only 'real' monster stat block, the rest are associated with magic items. Since crawling claws can fit in narrow gaps and move through the space of a medium creature, they can easily make their way behind enemies as a complicating factor in an encounter of otherwise simple zombies.ĬR 0, Larva: Yeah, did you know there's monster stat blocks in the Dungeon Master's Guide? Seriously, read it, its got siege weapons in it which is one of the coolest things you can do with minions. Just existing within 5ft of an enemy a) can confer flanking advantage to your allies and b) can impose disadvantage on ranged weapon attacks. I won't be covering every single thing that I think works well, just stuff I think many people might not have considered.ĬR 0, Crawling Claws: They might not deal much damage, but they don't need to. I'll be giving out suggestions for every tier of play, since a miniboss for lvl 2 players is a fodder monster for lvl 17. But you've got too much stuff to plan to go sifting through all those options so these are my personal suggestions in case you need a quick reference guide. And the classics like bandits, kobolds, goblins, orcs, skeletons etc can be easily spiced up with dirty tactics and extra tools such as bear traps and siege weapons (which you should definitely try btw). Not every low-CR creature makes for a good minion monster. Maybe you just realised that the action economy of your encounter is about as balanced as a Yagnoloth and want to level it out. Maybe you're stuck on ideas and you don't want to do goblins again.
